The best time to visit Europe for most groups is May, June and September. The weather is warm, the days are long and the main sights are open, but prices and crowds are lower than in July and August. Winter suits snow, Christmas markets and the northern lights, and is the cheapest season, apart from the Christmas and New Year weeks.
The short answer
- Best overall: May, June and September.
- Most expensive and crowded: July and August, and the Christmas and New Year week.
- Best value: late October, November (outside the Christmas market cities), January and February.
- For snow and the Alps in winter: December to March. The Jungfraujoch and Titlis are open all year.
- For the northern lights: roughly September to March in Lapland, Iceland and northern Norway.
The four seasons at a glance
Mild weather, flowers and gardens, and shoulder-season prices. Tulips in the Netherlands, and a quieter Paris, Rome and Switzerland than in summer. Easter weeks are busier.
Long, warm days and everything open, including the high Alpine passes. The busiest and most expensive season. Southern Europe can be very hot in July and August.
Warm September days, autumn colours, wine harvests and lower prices. Days get shorter through October, and some seasonal coastal hotels start to close.
Snow in the Alps, Christmas markets, the northern lights and the lowest prices of the year. Days are short, especially in the north, and Christmas week is expensive.
Europe month by month
| Month | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| January | Snow in the Alps, the northern lights in Lapland, quiet museums and low hotel rates. | Short days and cold weather. New Year week is still expensive. |
| February | Winter in the Alps and the north, and the Venice Carnival, which usually falls in February. | European school ski holidays fill the Alpine resorts. |
| March | The end of the ski season, the first spring days in the south, and the opening of Keukenhof from mid or late March. | Easter can fall in March or April and raises prices that week. |
| April | Tulips at their best, mild weather and shoulder-season prices. South Indian school holidays begin. | Easter weeks and spring school holidays in Europe. |
| May | One of the best months: long days, gardens in flower and most sights open. Indian summer holidays are in full swing. | Keukenhof closes in mid-May. Public holidays and trade fairs can fill some cities. |
| June | Long days, the midnight sun in the far north, the Swiss mountains fully open, and the first lavender in Provence at the end of the month. | Prices climb through late June. In Sweden, the Midsummer weekend empties the cities. |
| July | Peak summer, lavender in Provence, and cool air in the Alps and the north. | The highest prices and biggest crowds. Southern Europe, especially Greece, Italy and Spain, can be very hot. |
| August | Long summer days, festivals such as Edinburgh's, and the Alps and Scandinavia at their best. | Many Europeans are on holiday. In Italy, 15 August is a national holiday, and the Vatican Museums close on 14 and 15 August. |
| September | Warm days with fewer crowds, wine harvests, and Oktoberfest in Munich from mid or late September. | Munich hotels during Oktoberfest, and trade fairs in German cities. |
| October | Autumn colours, lower prices, and the start of the northern lights season. Diwali often falls in late October or November. | Shorter days, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of the month. The Glacier Express takes a maintenance break from mid-October to early December. |
| November | Low prices and quiet cities, then Christmas markets from mid or late November. | Many seasonal hotels on the Mediterranean coast and islands are closed. |
| December | Christmas markets until around 23 December, snow in the Alps and festive cities. | Closures on 24 to 26 December and 1 January, and New Year rates are the highest of the winter. |
Event dates such as Keukenhof, Oktoberfest and the Christmas markets move a little every year. We confirm them for your travel dates when we quote.
Fitting the Indian travel calendar
Indian travellers usually travel at fixed times of the year, so the question is often not "when is the best month" but "how do we make the most of the dates the client already has".
A very good fit. May and early June come before Europe's July peak, with long days and everything open. Book Swiss mountain trips, the Eiffel Tower and other timed entries early, because this is also when most Indian groups travel.
Autumn in Europe: good value, fewer crowds and pleasant days in central Europe, but short evenings. A trip just after Diwali 2026 can include the first Christmas markets. Avoid planning the Glacier Express in this period.
Snow, markets and festive cities, but the most expensive weeks of the winter. Plan around the closures on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and book hotels as early as possible.
Many Indian weddings fall between November and February, so honeymooners arrive in Europe's winter. Switzerland in the snow, Paris and Lapland work well. Italy's lakes and the Greek islands are best left for warmer months.
For groups from the Middle East, July and August are popular because of the summer heat at home. The Alps, the lakes and Scandinavia stay cool, while southern Europe is very hot.
Peak, shoulder and low season
| Peak | July and August, and the Christmas and New Year week. The highest hotel rates, the earliest sell-outs and the biggest crowds. |
|---|---|
| Shoulder | April to June, September and October. Good weather and lower prices than peak. The best balance for most groups. |
| Low | November (outside the market cities), January and February. The lowest rates, except in ski resorts and the northern lights regions, which are at their busiest. |
Seasons are not the only thing that moves prices. A big trade fair, a football final or a national holiday can fill a city in any month. We check the event calendar for every city on the itinerary before we quote. See our group tours page for how we plan series departures around them.
Before you fix the dates: our checklist
- Check the event calendar for every city: trade fairs, festivals and national holidays.
- Check the opening season of key sights and trains, such as Keukenhof or the Glacier Express break.
- Think about daylight. Northern Europe has very short days in winter and very long ones in summer.
- Think about heat. In July and August, plan southern sightseeing for the morning.
- Book timed entries early in May, June and the summer months. See our Swiss Travel Pass guide for the mountain trips.
- Allow for local holidays such as 15 August in Italy and Midsummer in Sweden.
