France Runs on Closed Days and Crit'Air Stickers

A France DMC is your operating partner on the ground — contracting French suppliers at net rates, holding the timed entries and coach authorisations Paris requires, and placing a coordinator beside your group from arrival to departure, under your brand.

Two French habits catch out itineraries written from abroad. The first is the closing day: the Louvre shuts on Tuesdays, Versailles on Mondays, and a client who has flown from Delhi to see one of them on the wrong morning does not forgive the agent. The second is Paris traffic law — the city runs a low-emission zone, coaches carry a Crit'Air classification, and an older vehicle is simply not admitted, whatever the rate sheet said.

Add pre-booked lift slots at the Eiffel Tower, a shuttle-only approach at Mont Saint-Michel, and an August fortnight when a great many Paris restaurants close, and France rewards the operator who knows the calendar. As a wider Europe DMC we extend a French leg into Switzerland, Italy or the UK on one contract.

Paris, the Riviera and Everything Between

A Louvre morning, a TGV south, a Provence château dinner and a Cannes congress are four different supplier worlds. We hold contracts in all of them and move a French programme onward across the border without a second agreement.

Closed Mondays, Closed Tuesdays, and Other French Facts

Sequencing a French week is mostly about closing days and slots. Versailles closes Mondays and its garden fountain shows run only on set days from April to October. The Louvre closes Tuesdays and admits groups on booked windows. Mont Saint-Michel takes no coach to the walls — vehicles stop at the mainland car park and a shuttle covers the last 2.5 km. And French industrial action is a recurring fact of operating life rather than a rare event, so a rail-based itinerary needs a coach contingency in the file, not invented on the morning.

Six Frances, Six Different Days Out

Paris, France

Paris & Île-de-France

The Louvre closed Tuesdays, Versailles closed Mondays, a low-emission zone governing which coach may enter, and set-down bays rather than doorstep arrivals.

French Riviera

French Riviera

Nice, Cannes and Monaco. The corniche roads and hill villages such as Èze take smaller vehicles, so a 50-seat coach and a clifftop village rarely belong in the same paragraph.

Provence

Provence

Avignon, the Luberon and lavender that flowers roughly late June to mid July — a two to three week window that decides when the photographs work.

Bordeaux & Loire

Bordeaux & the Loire

Château visits that cap group numbers per tasting, and Loire properties like Chambord and Chenonceau on timed entry through the summer.

Lyon & Strasbourg

Lyon & Strasbourg

Lyon is 2 hours from Paris by TGV and France's gastronomic anchor; Strasbourg carries one of Europe's strongest Christmas market seasons from late November.

Normandy & Champagne

Normandy & Champagne

The D-Day beaches sit about 3 hours from Paris and spread along 80 km of coast, so a day trip covers two sites well or five badly.

How a French Programme Comes Together

1

Brief & Feasibility

Send dates, group size and the must-sees. We reply within one business day, and say immediately if a date collides with a closing day.

2

Calendar Before Cost

Museum days, fountain show dates and TGV availability are checked before pricing, because the calendar is what actually constrains a French week.

3

Operate on the Ground

Contracts, allotments, licensed guides and a coordinator running the programme in real time, under your brand.

4

Report & Reconcile

Post-programme reporting and budget reconciliation, with the local taxe de séjour itemised.

What Keeps a French File Calm

The Calendar Checked First

Closing days, show dates and seasonal windows confirmed before an itinerary is priced, not after a client has booked flights.

A Contingency in the File

French strike action is planned for in advance, with coach alternatives already contracted rather than improvised.

White-Label Delivery

Brand-safe execution under your name, with transparent net rates and clean reporting.

One Europe DMC

Continue a French leg into Switzerland, Italy or Britain on the same contract.

"Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better for our business partners' ultimate satisfaction."

France: What Agents Ask Before They Book

What is a France DMC?
A France DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting French hotels, coaches, licensed guides and venues at net rates, holding the timed entries and vehicle authorisations France requires, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.
Which days are the big Paris sites closed?
The Louvre closes on Tuesdays and Versailles on Mondays, and several smaller museums follow one or the other. We sequence the week around those two facts first, because everything else in a Paris itinerary can move and they cannot.
What is Crit'Air and does it affect our coach?
Crit'Air is the French vehicle emissions classification, displayed as a sticker, and Paris operates a low-emission zone that admits only qualifying classes. In practice it means older coaches cannot work the city. We contract compliant vehicles as standard, which is why we will not quote the very cheapest operator on a Paris file.
Can a coach reach Mont Saint-Michel?
Only as far as the mainland parking area. From there a shuttle covers the final stretch of roughly 2.5 km to the abbey approach, and the walk up inside the village is steep and cobbled. We build both the shuttle wait and the climb into the timing, and flag it for groups with limited mobility.
How do you plan around French strikes?
By treating them as a normal operating risk rather than an emergency. Rail-based legs carry a pre-agreed coach alternative, we monitor announcements from the moment a file is confirmed, and we tell you early enough for a client conversation rather than a same-day apology.
When is lavender actually in flower in Provence?
Broadly late June to mid July, varying with altitude and the year's weather. It is a genuinely short window, and a Provence programme sold on lavender imagery outside it will disappoint. We would rather move the dates or reset the expectation at proposal stage.
Is there a tourist tax in France?
Yes, the taxe de séjour, set locally per person per night and varying by commune and hotel category. It is usually collected at the property, so we show it as its own line rather than folding it into the room rate.
Is August a good month for a Paris group?
It is operable but different. Many independent restaurants and some suppliers close for part of the month while Parisians take their holidays, so the dining list narrows considerably. Hotel availability is often easier, which is the trade-off. We plan an August file from a different supplier list rather than the usual one.
