Zermatt Has No Road, and Other Swiss Facts

A Switzerland DMC is your operating partner on the ground — contracting Swiss suppliers at net rates, holding panoramic-train reservations and mountain-railway capacity, and placing a coordinator beside your group from arrival to departure, under your brand.

Switzerland is the one European country where the coach is usually the wrong answer. Zermatt is car-free: vehicles stop at Täsch and the group transfers to the shuttle train for the last few kilometres. Wengen and Mürren are the same. The scenic railways that clients actually come for — the Glacier Express, the Bernina, the GoldenPass — require seat reservations on top of any rail pass, and those reservations are the thing that runs out, not the seats on the coach you were quoting.

The other Swiss reality is that you are buying weather. Jungfraujoch sits at 3,454 metres, and on a clouded day the group pays a great deal to stand inside a white room. We build flexible peak days and say so at proposal stage. As a wider Europe DMC we extend a Swiss leg into Italy, France or Austria on one contract.

Rail, Peaks and Lakes on One Contract

Panoramic-train reservations, mountain railway capacity, car-free resort logistics and lakeside conference hotels are four separate contracting problems. We hold all four, and carry a Swiss programme across any of three borders without a second agreement.

Booking a Mountain You Cannot See

Three Swiss facts govern the file. The scenic trains need seat reservations that sell out long before the trains do, and the Glacier Express takes around 8 hours from St Moritz to Zermatt, so it is a day, not a transfer. Mountain railways close for maintenance in the shoulder weeks of spring and autumn, which quietly removes the headline excursion from an April or November itinerary. And the high peaks are weather-dependent: we hold an alternative for every summit day, because a group that has paid for Jungfraujoch and seen cloud remembers who sold it.

The Chapel Bridge, lake steamers and Mount Pilatus by cogwheel railway — the classic first Swiss day, and the one most groups actually remember.

Interlaken & the Jungfrau

Interlaken & the Jungfrau

Jungfraujoch at 3,454 metres, reached by a rail chain from Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. A clear-weather day is extraordinary and a cloudy one is expensive.

Zermatt & the Matterhorn

Zermatt & the Matterhorn

A car-free village: coaches stop at Täsch and the shuttle train covers the last stretch. Gornergrat climbs to 3,089 metres for the classic Matterhorn view.

Geneva & Lake Geneva

Geneva & Lake Geneva

Montreux, Chillon Castle and the Lavaux terraces, with a French-speaking supplier base and a natural onward link into France.

St Moritz & the Bernina

St Moritz & the Bernina

The Bernina line runs to 2,253 metres at Ospizio Bernina and drops into Italy, which makes it the neatest way to leave Switzerland southward.

How a Swiss File Is Assembled

1

Brief & Rail Check

Send dates, group size and the journeys wanted. We reply within one business day with what the reservation system will still release.

2

Seats Before Hotels

Panoramic-train reservations and mountain railway capacity come first, because they run out long before a bed does.

3

Operate on the Ground

Contracts, allotments, resort transfers and a coordinator running the programme in real time, under your brand.

4

Report & Reconcile

Post-programme reporting and budget reconciliation, with any weather-driven substitution priced honestly.

Why Swiss Files Stay on Schedule

Reservations Actually Held

Panoramic-train seats booked with the pass at contracting, and group seating kept together rather than split down the carriage.

A Plan for Cloud

Every summit day carries a costed alternative, so a weathered-out peak becomes a good lower day rather than a wasted one.

White-Label Delivery

Brand-safe execution under your name, with transparent net rates and clean reporting.

One Europe DMC

Continue a Swiss leg into Italy, France or Austria on the same contract.

"Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better for our business partners' ultimate satisfaction."

Switzerland: What Agents Ask Us

What is a Switzerland DMC?
A Switzerland DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting Swiss hotels, transport, guides and venues at net rates, holding rail reservations and mountain railway capacity, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.
Why can't the coach drive into Zermatt?
Zermatt is a car-free village. Vehicles stop at Täsch and passengers transfer to a shuttle train for the last few kilometres, then to electric taxis inside the resort. It is straightforward once planned, but the luggage handling and the transfer time have to be in the itinerary rather than discovered at the barrier. Wengen and Mürren work the same way.
Do we need seat reservations if we hold a rail pass?
On the panoramic trains, yes. A pass covers travel but the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and GoldenPass all require a separate seat reservation, and for groups those are what sell out — often many months ahead for summer. We place them at contracting, not when the file is confirmed.
Is the Glacier Express a transfer or an excursion?
An excursion. The full St Moritz to Zermatt run takes around 8 hours, so it occupies the day and arrives in the evening. Shorter sections work well when the schedule is tight, and we will usually suggest one rather than let a group spend a whole day seated when the itinerary cannot absorb it.
What if the weather closes the mountain?
Every summit day in our files carries a contracted alternative — a lake steamer, a lower viewpoint, a town programme — priced in advance. Mountain railways also suspend service in high wind. Selling a peak without a fallback is how a good week turns into a complaint.
Are the mountain railways open all year?
Most close for maintenance during the shoulder weeks of spring and autumn, typically parts of April to May and October to November, and dates differ by railway. It is the commonest reason an off-season itinerary loses its headline excursion, so we check every mountain leg against the operating calendar before quoting.
Why is Switzerland so much more expensive than its neighbours?
Costs are simply higher in Swiss francs, and the mountain excursions clients want are individually expensive. The honest saving is structural — fewer, better peak days rather than one every morning, and a base in a valley town rather than a resort village. We would rather build that than quote a thin version of the same week.
Can Switzerland be combined with Italy or France?
Very easily, and the crossing can be the highlight. The Bernina line drops from 2,253 metres into Italy, and Geneva sits on the French border. We contract both sides of the frontier under one agreement so the group never notices the handover.
