Getting the water into the plan is what separates a comfortable Stockholm day from a tiring one.
Then there is one week you cannot ignore. Around Midsummer in late June the country genuinely stops — offices, many restaurants and much of the retail simply close while Swedes go to the countryside. Built by Operators
Midsummer falls on a Friday in late June and takes the whole weekend with it. Restaurants close, museums cut their hours, shops shut and the cities empty into the countryside. A leisure group arriving that weekend finds a beautiful, quiet, largely shuttered country. Three further things govern a Swedish file. Alcohol above supermarket strength is sold only through the state chain, which closes early and does not open on Sundays, so event drinks are contracted through the venue rather than bought en route. Sweden is close to cashless, and a group carrying only notes will meet refusals. And the Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi is rebuilt each winter and exists roughly from December to April — outside that window it is not closed, it has melted.
