Tour coaches run the Ring of Kerry anti-clockwise. It is not a preference, it is how the road is worked, and an itinerary written the other way around will meet every other coach in Kerry head-on in a lane built for one. That single rule tells you most of what Ireland asks of an operator: the roads are the constraint, and the vehicle has to be chosen for them before the itinerary is priced.

Then there is the border. A tour that takes in the Giant's Causeway crosses into the United Kingdom, which means sterling rather than euro, different VAT and a supplier base contracted separately. It is a soft crossing, but it is a real one on your costing. As a wider Europe DMC we run Ireland alongside Britain or mainland Europe on one contract.

Ireland's difficulties are physical rather than bureaucratic. Kerry and Connemara have stretches where a 50-seat coach either cannot pass or cannot turn, so the vehicle decision comes before the route. Distances read short and drive long: Dublin to Killarney is about 300 km and takes the better part of 4 hours with a comfort stop. The Cliffs of Moher require pre-booked arrival, and Dublin's headline attractions — the Guinness Storehouse, the Book of Kells at Trinity — work on timed entry that sells through in summer. Cross into Northern Ireland and the money changes to sterling mid-tour, which surprises clients unless someone has told them.

What is an Ireland DMC?

An Ireland DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting Irish hotels, coaches, guides and venues at net rates, sizing transport to the roads, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.

Why does the Ring of Kerry have to be driven one way?

Because the road is narrow and tour coaches all work it in the same direction, anti-clockwise, so that large vehicles never meet head-on. An operator who ignores it will spend the day reversing into passing places. It also means the timing of your departure from Killarney matters, since everyone else is running the same loop.

Does a Northern Ireland leg complicate the booking?

It changes the currency and the supplier base rather than the ease of travel. Crossing the border is seamless, but Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, so hotels and attractions there invoice in sterling and sit under a different VAT regime. We contract both sides and show the two currencies separately in your quote.

What size coach can you use?

It depends entirely on the route. Motorway and city touring takes a full-size coach of 50 seats comfortably; Kerry, Connemara and much of the Wild Atlantic Way do not. For those we use mid-size vehicles, and for a large group we run two smaller coaches rather than one that cannot complete the route.

How far apart are the main touring points?

Further in time than in distance. Dublin to Killarney is around 300 km but close to 4 hours with a stop; Killarney to Galway is a similar 4 hours. Irish touring works best at two nights per base, and itineraries that try for one night everywhere spend the holiday on the coach.

What do you do about the weather?

Plan for it. The Cliffs of Moher and the Causeway can be closed or unpleasant in an Atlantic gale, so every exposed day in our files carries an indoor alternative that is already contracted — a distillery, a castle, an abbey — rather than a suggestion made on the morning.

Can you arrange links golf tee times?

Yes, on the championship links, though the best courses release group tee times well over a year ahead and hold firm on their conditions. Golf files therefore need committing much earlier than a standard leisure group, and we will tell you plainly when a request has come too late.

Which airport should a group fly into?

Dublin for the widest connectivity and an east-to-west routing; Shannon if the itinerary starts in the south-west, which saves a long first transfer; Belfast if the tour begins in the north. We often recommend arriving into one and departing from another so the group never retraces a day.
