Every Bus and Train in Luxembourg Is Free

A Luxembourg DMC is your operating partner on the ground — contracting Luxembourgish suppliers at net rates, using a transport network that costs your client nothing, and placing a coordinator beside your group from arrival to departure, under your brand.

In 2020 Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport free — buses, trains and the capital's tram, nationwide, for everyone. For a DMC that is not a curiosity, it is a line removed from the budget. Short city hops, station transfers and even the run out to the Moselle can go on scheduled services at no cost, which leaves the coach for the legs that genuinely need one.

The country is small enough to cross before lunch — roughly 80 km top to bottom — so almost every itinerary works from a single base in the capital. As a wider Europe DMC we join Luxembourg to Belgium, Germany or France on one contract.

A Capital on Two Levels

A city split between a clifftop and a gorge, a fortress carved into rock, a hotel market priced for bankers rather than tourists, and three borders within an hour are four separate problems. We hold all four, and continue into Belgium, Germany or France without a second agreement.

The City That Is Cheaper at the Weekend

Luxembourg City runs on business travel — banking, EU institutions, the courts on the Kirchberg plateau — so its hotels fill Monday to Thursday and empty on Friday. That is the reverse of almost every leisure city in Europe, and it means a weekend group can be placed in properties that would be unaffordable midweek. Getting the days right is worth more here than negotiating the rate. The other thing to plan is the vertical: the old town sits on a cliff and the Grund quarter lies in the gorge below it, joined by free public lifts rather than a gentle walk. A group that is walked down and not lifted back up will remember the climb.

Airport handling at Luxembourg (LUX), 6 km from the centre
Weekend dates used deliberately, where the hotel market is softest
Upper town and Grund linked by the free public lifts, not by the hill
Scheduled transport used at no cost, keeping the coach for the long legs

The terraced rock fortifications above the Alzette, Luxembourg City

The Bock Casemates

Kilometres of galleries cut into the rock beneath the city, on timed entry with narrow passages and steps that suit a smaller party.

An institutional building in Luxembourg City

Kirchberg

The EU institutions, the Philharmonie and the modern conference capacity. This is the district that sets the city's midweek hotel prices.

Vianden Castle above the wooded valley

Vianden & the Ardennes

A restored hilltop castle about 45 km north, with a chairlift to the viewpoint and a valley of walking trails below it.

Terraced vineyards above the Moselle river

The Moselle

Riesling terraces and crémant cellars along the German border, roughly 30 km east and reachable on free scheduled transport.

Rock formations in the wooded gorges near Echternach

Echternach & Mullerthal

The oldest town in the country and the sandstone gorges around it — the walking half of a Luxembourg programme.

Luxembourg: What Agents Usually Ask

What is a Luxembourg DMC?
A Luxembourg DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting Luxembourgish hotels, transport, guides and venues at net rates, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.
Is public transport genuinely free?
Yes. Since 2020 buses, trains and the capital's tram have been free of charge nationwide, for residents and visitors alike. For a group programme it means short transfers, station runs and several day trips carry no transport cost at all, which is unusual enough that agents often ask us to confirm it twice.
Why do you recommend weekend dates?
Because the city's hotel demand comes from banking and the EU institutions, so rooms are tight and expensive Monday to Thursday and much softer from Friday. It is the opposite of most leisure cities. Where a client's dates can move, shifting a two-night stay onto the weekend usually buys a better hotel rather than a cheaper invoice.
How much of the country can we cover in a day?
Most of it. The country is roughly 80 km from end to end, so Vianden, the Moselle and Echternach are each within an easy drive of the capital and no itinerary needs a second hotel. We build almost every Luxembourg programme from a single base.
Are the casemates suitable for every group?
Not for everyone. The galleries are cut into rock, with narrow passages, uneven floors and steps, and they are cool underground. They are wonderful for a mobile group and difficult for anyone with limited mobility, so we ask at brief stage and substitute the fortifications walk above ground where needed.
What languages will we meet?
Luxembourgish, French and German are all official, and English is widely spoken in the capital because of the international workforce. Guiding in English is straightforward; we arrange other languages on request and confirm at booking rather than assuming.
Can Luxembourg be combined with its neighbours?
It is almost designed for it. Trier in Germany is about 50 km away and Metz in France about 65 km, with Brussels a comfortable drive beyond. We contract the whole route ourselves, so a three-country week runs on one file and one invoice.
Is it worth more than two nights?
On its own, two or three is usually right — the capital is compact and the country is small. Four or more works well when the programme adds the Ardennes castles and the Moselle properly, or when Luxembourg is the base for a cross-border week rather than the whole trip.
