Every Greek itinerary is really a transport plan wearing a holiday's clothes. Athens to Santorini is roughly 5 hours on a high-speed ferry or 8 on a conventional one, and in July and August the meltemi wind can cancel sailings outright — sometimes for a day, occasionally longer. An island-hopping programme without a contingency is not an itinerary, it is a hope. We build the sea into the plan and keep an air alternative costed alongside it.

On land, the Acropolis now works on timed entry with a daily visitor cap, and in the hottest weeks the site closes through the middle of the day for safety. Wind, Heat and the Ferry Timetable

Three things decide whether a Greek file runs smoothly. Wind comes first: the meltemi blows hardest in July and August and can suspend sailings at a few hours' notice, so we hold flight alternatives on the island legs rather than discovering the problem at the port. Heat comes second — Athens regularly passes 38 degrees in high summer and the Acropolis closes through the worst of the afternoon, which moves the site visit to the opening hour. Capacity comes third: Santorini and Mykonos have small hotel inventories and a cruise-day crowd on top, so a group of 80 in August is a very different conversation from a group of 80 in May.

Greece: What Agents Need to Know First

What is a Greece DMC?

A Greece DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting Greek hotels, transport, licensed guides and venues at net rates, securing ferry and site capacity, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.

What happens if the ferry is cancelled?

We plan for it. The meltemi wind suspends sailings most often in July and August, so every island leg in our files carries a costed air alternative and a hotel that knows the group may arrive late. The cost of that protection is visible in the proposal, because pretending the risk does not exist is how a week unravels.

Ferry or flight between the islands?

Ferry is cheaper and part of the experience; flight is quicker and far less weather-exposed. Athens to Santorini is roughly 5 hours by high-speed ferry against under an hour in the air. For short programmes and older groups we usually recommend flying at least one leg, and we will say so rather than sell the longer crossing.

How does the Acropolis timed entry work?

Entry is by time slot with a daily visitor cap, so a group without a booked slot may simply not get in on a busy day. In the hottest weeks the site also closes through the middle of the afternoon. We book the opening hour wherever we can, which is both cooler and considerably quieter.

Can coaches operate on Santorini and Mykonos?

Only on the main roads, and not in the towns. Fira, Oia and Mykonos town are lanes rather than streets, so transfers run on minibuses and the last stretch is walked. Anyone quoting a full-size coach to a Mykonos town hotel has not operated the island.

When is the best time to bring a group?

May, June, September and early October. The sea is warm, the heat is manageable, the meltemi is weaker and island hotels have capacity. High summer works but costs more, crowds more and carries the greatest weather risk on the crossings.

Are there dress rules at the monasteries?

Yes, and they are enforced at the door at Meteora and at working monasteries elsewhere. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and wraps are not always available on site. We brief the group in advance rather than leaving it to the guide at the entrance.

Do you handle cruise shore excursions?

Yes, at Piraeus, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Katakolon. Santorini is the demanding one, because passengers come ashore by tender and rise to the town by cable car — a bottleneck that decides how much a shore day can realistically contain.
