The three things clients ask for in Portugal are the three a full-size coach cannot deliver. Sintra's roads are narrow and one-way, and the approach to Pena Palace is worked by small vehicles rather than touring coaches. Lisbon's Alfama is a staircase with houses on it. Tram 28, which appears in every brochure, is a working public tram of about twenty seats — it is not a group activity, however the itinerary describes it.

Sintra Is the Day That Goes Wrong

More Portuguese itineraries fail at Sintra than anywhere else, and always for the same reasons. Pena Palace runs on timed entry, the hill road is narrow and one-way, and touring coaches do not go up — groups transfer to small vehicles or the local shuttle, which adds time nobody budgeted. Then there is the surface: Portuguese pavement is polished limestone, beautiful and genuinely slippery in rain, which matters on a hill with an older group. Elsewhere, Belém sits about 6 km west of central Lisbon with its own queues, and Fátima fills completely around the 12th and 13th of each month from May to October, when the pilgrimages run.

What is a Portugal DMC?

A Portugal DMC is a trade-only partner that operates your programme on the ground — designing the itinerary, contracting Portuguese hotels, transport, licensed guides and venues at net rates, securing the timed entries and small vehicles the country's streets require, and coordinating the group on site. HCG does all of it under your brand, as your single point of contact.

Why can't our coach go up to Pena Palace?

The Sintra hill road is narrow, steep and worked as a one-way circuit, and touring coaches do not run it. Groups transfer to small vehicles or the local shuttle for the final ascent, which takes time that has to be in the plan. Combined with the palace's timed entry, Sintra needs a properly built day rather than a stop wedged into a Lisbon morning.

Can a group ride Tram 28?

Not as a group. It is an ordinary public tram of around twenty seats, usually full, and a favourite of pickpockets. We either arrange a private historic tram charter, which is a genuinely good product, or route the group through the same streets on foot with a guide. What we will not do is promise an experience the vehicle cannot hold.

When should we avoid Fátima?

Around the 12th and 13th of each month from May to October, unless the pilgrimage is exactly what your client wants. Those dates draw very large crowds and the town's accommodation is committed far ahead. For a leisure group passing through, a day either side is a completely different experience.

How do you handle the cobbled streets?

By planning around them. Portuguese pavement is polished limestone laid in patterns — handsome, and slippery in rain. Lisbon's older quarters combine that surface with steep gradients, so we brief on footwear, choose drop-off points that shorten the climb, and for groups with limited mobility we substitute a tuk-tuk or minivan leg rather than a walk.

Is a Benagil cave trip guaranteed?

No. The Algarve sea caves are only reachable when conditions allow, and Atlantic swell cancels boats at short notice. We hold a land alternative on every boat day so the group has a good excursion either way rather than an afternoon of apologies.

Are there city taxes and road tolls to budget for?

Yes to both. Lisbon and Porto charge a per-person nightly city tax collected at the hotel, and several Portuguese motorways use electronic-only tolling that requires a transponder on the vehicle. We arrange the transponder as standard and show both as their own lines rather than folding them into a rate.

Can Portugal be combined with Spain?

Easily, and it is how most of our Iberian business runs. Lisbon to Seville is a comfortable driving day and the border is open, so a nine or ten night circuit covering both countries works well. We contract both sides ourselves, which means one file, one invoice and no handover at the frontier.
